Information Communications Technicians play an essential role in maintaining and repairing communication systems, helping organisations reduce technical disruption and improve productivity. Apprentices may specialise as a Support Technician, Network Technician, or Digital Communications Technician, depending on business requirements.

Information Communications Technician Standard Information

  • To go through gateway, the following criteria have to be met:

    • The apprentice has achieved English and mathematics at level 2.

    • The apprentice has completed a portfolio demonstrating all of the required knowledge, skills and behaviour of the apprenticeship.

  • The assessment approach for this standard has three methods:

    • Project report with questioning.

    • Professional Discussion.

    • Support Technician.

    • Network Technician.

    • Digital Communications Technician.

    • 1:1 Independent End-Point Assessor (IEPA) and apprentice - 60 minutes (+-10%).

    • Minimum of 10 open questions to be asked by IEPA.

    • Apprentice to receive minimum of 5 working days notice.

    • Remote using video conferencing.

    • Project theme set by the employer and the apprentice has 4 weeks after gateway to submit report.

    • Project to be completed in the workplace under normal supervision.

    • Max of 1,500 words (+-10%).

    • Questioning (1:1 IEPA and apprentice) – 30 minutes (+-10%).

    • The apprentice will be given a weeks’ notice. The IEPA will ask a minimum of 5 questions.

Apprentice Journey

  • Enrol on programme.

  • Start building your Reflective Portfolio.

  • Functional Skills support begins (if needed).

Start of Apprenticeship


  • Continuous technical training and on-the-job learning.

  • Regular progress reviews and portfolio evidence gathering.

  • Core skills: networking, communications, hardware, software support.

  • Achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English & Maths (if required.
