Engineering Operatives play a key role in engineering operations, supporting the manufacturing and engineering sector by performing essential tasks that ensure production runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Apprentices develop practical skills in operating machinery, following processes, maintaining quality standards, and contributing to the overall success of engineering projects and operations.

Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Standard Information

To move into the Assessment stage, the apprentice must have:
Completed a minimum of 36 months on-programme training.
Achieved Level 2 English and Maths.
Completed a Portfolio of Evidence – This underpins the Professional Discussion and must demonstrate how the apprentice has met the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in the standard.

Practical Observation with Questions.
Technical Interview.

Apprentices will specialise in one of six distinct pathways including electrical, mechanical, instrumentation or plant operations - depending on their role and sector. The Assessment will reflect the specific duties of their chosen pathway.

Duration: 4 hours (+10% tolerance if needed)
Environment: Real work setting or simulated environment approved by the EPAO
Assessed by: Independent End-Point Assessor (IEPA)
Questions: The assessor will ask questions during or after the observation (minimum 5, maximum 10), based on the tasks being carried out.

Use of tools and equipment
Following procedures and safety protocols
Interpreting technical documentation
Carrying out maintenance tasks correctly
Problem-solving and troubleshooting

Typically lasts two hours and a maximum of two and a half hours.
The technical expert will use standardised questions from an agreed set of questions developed by NAS.
Weighting is 40% towards overall EPA grade.

45 minute electronic or paper-based question paper.
