What is a Metal Fabricator?

Metal Fabricators manufacture, assemble, and install metal components and structures using techniques such as welding, cutting, shaping, and joining. Apprentices develop practical skills that are applicable across sectors including construction, manufacturing, and engineering, producing everything from structural steelwork to bespoke metal products.

Metal Fabricator Standard Information

  • Apprentices must:

    • Complete a minimum of 36 months training on-programme

    • Achieve Level 2 English and Maths

    • Compile a portfolio of evidence demonstrating KSBs

    • Be confirmed ready by employer and training provider

  • The assessment approach for this standard has three methods:

    • Practical Observation with Questions.

    • Professional Discussion

    • Duration: 6 hours +10% (with possible breaks.)

    • Location: Real or simulated working environment approved by Notebook.

    • Assessed by: Independent Apprenticeship Assessor.

    • Assesses: Fabrication techniques, safety, quality control, and interpretation of drawings.

    • Follow-up Questions: At least 10 open questions by assessor probing underpinning knowledge alongside observed metal fabrication tasks.

    • Duration: 40 minutes.

    • Format: One-on-one, face-to-face or virtual.

    • Underpinned by: Portfolio of evidence.

    • Assesses: Knowledge, skills, behaviours, and reflection on work practice.

Apprentice Journey

  • Enrol on programme.

  • Begin KSB development.

  • Start building your Reflective Portfolio (2–3 evidence examples).

  • Retake = Extra learning.

  • Gain practical learning, reviews with employer/provider.

  • Portfolio developed with 2–3 recent work examples.
