What is a Network Engineer?

Network Engineers play a key role in ensuring secure and efficient business communication by designing, installing, maintaining, and supporting communication systems. This apprenticeship develops apprentices’ expertise in network configuration, cloud technologies, administration, and monitoring, helping organisations minimise disruption and maintain reliable connectivity.

Network Engineer Standard Information

  • To go through gateway, the following criteria have to be met:

    • The apprentice has completed training covering the knowledge, skills and behaviour of the apprenticeship.

    • The apprentice has achieved English and mathematics at level 2.

    • The apprentice has completed a portfolio demonstrating all of the required knowledge, skills and behaviour of the apprenticeship.

  • The assessment approach for this standard has three methods:

    • Simulation Assessment and Questioning.

      Professional Discussion.

    • 2 x 7 hour practical assessments via virtual Lab on consecutive days.

    • Minimum of 10 Questions 5 days after Labs.

    • 45 minutes for questioning.

    • 60 minutes.

    • 15 Questions minimum.

Apprentice Journey

  • Enrol on programme.

  • Portfolio and off-the-job training begins.

Start of Apprenticeship

  • Training in design, config, testing and troubleshooting.

  • Portfolio evidence gathered throughout.

  • Practical projects using real and virtual networks.

  • Complete English & Maths, if needed.

  • Resit = No new learning.

  • Retake = Extra learning.

  • All EPA components to be completed within 6 months.

Assessment

  • Simulation Assessment 1: Network Failure (7hrs).

  • Simulation Assessment 2: Network Optimisation (7hrs).

  • Questioning – Typically 60 minutes.

  • Professional Discussion – 60 mins.
