What Does the End-Point Assessment (EPA) Involve?

At the end of the apprenticeship, learners must complete a rigorous Apprenticeship Assessment to demonstrate their readiness. For the Level 3 Engineering Fitter, this includes:

Professional discussion

  • Duration: At least 60 minutes and the assessor will have the discretion to increase the time of the discussion by up to 10% to allow the apprentice to complete this method of the EPA.

  • Questions: The assessor will ask at least 8 questions during or after the observation.

  • The apprentice will need to compile a portfolio of evidence before the EPA gateway.

Project: Report including evidence and questioning

  • Typically lasts 60 minutes, plus 10% at the assessor’s discretion.

  • The technical expert will ask 10 questions from an agreed set of questions developed by Notebook Assessment Services. Follow up questions are allowed to seek clarification.

Multiple-choice test

  • 30 multiple choice questions.

  • 60 minutes to complete.

  • Overall minimum score of 18 to pass the MCQ.

Gateway Requirements

To move into the Assessment stage, the apprentice must have:

  • Completed a minimum of 42 months on-programme training.

  • Achieved Level 2 English and Mathematics.

  • Completed a Portfolio of Evidence – This underpins the interview and must demonstrate how the apprentice has met the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in the standard.
